I love the players. I’ll jump and sing and drink for them every game this season. I know that with our support they’ll play hard each game.

BUT.

I stand by the below with regards with the management. You can stop writing that emailing now.

Ye a little faith, right?

We show an amazing outpouring of support for a poor team on the field in expectation that it will improve sooner rather than later. We assume that an organization would want to reward our enthusiasm.

I always find is completely obnoxious when someone pulls out the “Well, you know what happens when you Ass-u-me.” Seriously, there are few things that make me want to hit a guy more than when they say that.

A day before the season opener, however, and I’m definitely starting to feel the ass for assuming all would be well.

Though really, it was more than hands off assumption on my part, and all Toronto FC fans for that matter. It’s been an active participation in the team’s only real success thus far (gaining support…)

Months ago it was clear that there would be over a THOUSAND fans traveling to Columbus for the season opener, and now that it’s a day away estimates are being put in the 2500 range. 2500! Are you kidding me? That’s an incredible showing of support and, quite frankly, if I’m Mo Johnston (and I’m honest) I’m pretty embarrassed at this point because not only have I not improved the squad in the off-season, I’ve arguably made it worse!

Worse than a last place team. Magical.

This is true Mickey-In-Fantasia-With-Dancing-Mop-And-Bucket-MAGICAL.

So la la la, blind faith, blind love, right?

No no, it looks like Mr. Carver wants to punch me in the stomach too. I mean, WTF. Who are you kidding, Johnny? We’re not going to notice DANNY-EFFING-DICHIO on the bench?

Alright Johnny, a little heart-to-heart for a minute.

Naturally, you know more about the game and you know much more about putting a squad together. But if your squad is already crap, can’t you give the fans something to feel great about? I don’t have a single sporting memory greater than Dichio putting in that improbable shot to tie the season closer last year. Danny Dichio is Toronto FC to the fans, so if you’re going to ask us to sit through another ugly season, don’t take away the single thing that most of us identify with. You’ll just be making it that much easier for the fans to walk away.

But back to the regular rant –

I don’t get it really. It’s like they want me to hate them.

We’ve officially made it to Mickey-In-Fantasia-With-Dancing-Army-Of-Mops-And-Buckets-With-Fireworks-And-Maybe-Even-That-Genie-From-Aladdin-MAGICAL.

DO BETTER!

Please…….

Looks like both Darren and his manager, Glen Roeder, are resigned to part ways come the end of the season.

And while it appears as though Darren has picked up another injury, this time to his groin, it does not appear as though he’ll be out for any considerable length of time.

His form, prior to the injury, had noticably improved - hopefully gearing up for the next step in his career (so long as it’s here…)

More and more I’m hearing grumblings about Mo’s ongoing search for talent and his apparent bias towards those players from the British Isles. In fact, as the transfer window close approaches, the opinion that Mo hasn’t looked far nor wide enough is cropping up in all corners of the Toronto FC supporters’ network.

Let’s look at this issue for just a minute, and I’ll give my take on what I believe is going on.

Firstly, on his bias, I couldn’t agree more. Save for his trip to South America at season’s end, it appears that he hasn’t taken any trips to exotic locales in search of the proverbial “diamond in the rough.” England, Scotland Ireland, and Wales are what Mo knows from his history as a player; North America, he has learned from the end of his playing career and from his time in management.

As universal as soccer is, once on the pitch, there are obvious benefits to knowing a player’s background, the systems in which they were trained from youth, and the mentality by which they were brought up. All those things help put a team together that will play like, well, a team. So, I can’t blame Mo for sticking to what he knows and not risking more fruitless trips to unknown regions.

However, that doesn’t completely excuse an organzation from scouting a region. Other organizations, those in Europe surely, have scouts in all sorts of locations watching the developement of players from the lowest levels and up. Manchester United is building a training facilty in Oakville! So why can’t Toronto FC put a scout in Africa, Asia, Continental Europe, and South America?

Here, we get to the heart of the matter. Resources: Time, people, money. All are lacking for a wide and deep search.

Take personal player biases out of the picture, there is no way that Mo could have visited and gotten anything approaching a quality look at every player that might be of benefit to the team, all across the globe. Ideas that he should’ve seen so-and-so play in Egypt and some other guy play in River Plate, is great in theory. But what would be better is a team of trusted scouts that have a specific job. Big teams have them, but Toronto FC is not a big team.

Yet, anyway.

MLSE certainly has the resources, but to be honest TFC is still the organizations third tier franchise. Proving a need to further the search so that the team can achieve the “next level” will (assuming that MLSE actually cares is TFC wins) bring the resources, in scouts, money, and time, to find those palyers. BUT, there’s not great evidence that such an extensive search is necessary to win at the MLS level.

So, while everyone is probably right that Mo isn’t looking at their favourite player in Guatemala, Slovenia, or Laos, understand that it takes local knowledge to make informed approaches of players. It may come one day, but I’d stop holding my breath.

Seriously, you’re turning purple.

Liam MIller played several season in the rotation for Manchester United. He failed to crack the first team on a regular basis never quite living up to the promise that Sir. Alex Ferguson expected of him. Continue down the career path a couple years, and his former captain, Roy Keane, who also happens to be his current manager at Sunderland appears to also have lost faith in him. Apparently, his “time-keeping” hasn’t been up to snuff of late and Roy has transfer listed Liam.

Enter the BBC to report this morning

Liam Miller’s poor timekeeping has not put off Major League Soccer’s Toronto, who want him and Sunderland team-mate Ross Wallace.

Now Wallace’s name has been tossed around of late on the message boards, but this is the first I’ve heard about Liam. Given my love for all things Manchester United and Toronto FC, I’d be happy to have Liam aboard. Call me crazy, but I think Liam’s shortcomings in “time-Keeping” will have much less of an impact on his performance over here. And to see him back in one of the two greatest Red kits out there, would be fantastic.

Needless to say, I’ll be digging this rumour for every bit of news I can get.
