I got a little upset last week prior to TFC’s first game. I couldn’t have been less impressed with the result of a whole offseason of player evaluations which led to little joining the club and a lot (read: Ronnie O’Brien) leaving the club.
THe loss came and went, as expected. I definitely didn’t want to sound the pessimist, but there was little reason to believe that TFC was going to be competitive fielding the squad of opening day. I was angry because I thought we deserved more as fans, and naturally my being upset got back to MoMo.
This just in (from The Score Footy Blog, which btw is the definitive place for TFC news these days):
Laurent Robert took a physical at 4pm this afternoon down at BMO Field and although the results are kept close to the chest by those in on the situation its a done deal and Robert has signed a 2-year-deal with the club. Robert, who was on a considerable wage at Derby, is expected to join the club for around a third of the wages he was getting at Pride Park and as reported earlier will not be a designated player. He will be granted his release from Derby who will pay him out the remaining money on the rest of his contract.
Happy to hear it. Now, I’m quite aware of this guy’s history. He’s been unsettled at several clubs from Benfica to Newcastle, but the fact remains that he has more pure talent than just about anyone in the MLS. It’s a bit of a leap of faith that he’s coming to the club for the right reason (to better his career…) and not just for a paycheck. Word is that they’re also quite close to signing Rohan Ricketts, but nothing official has come of that yet.
So thanks MoMo. I know it took a bit of a kick in the ass, but you’re at least trying. And trying is the first step to doing better.
Which is all I ever asked for anyway…
