In the past two week, Robert, Guevara, and now Ricketts have signed for us and there’s no doubt that our midfield is stronger now than it’s ever been. Guevara is arguably the best player that’s ever signed for TFC and Robert and Ricketts are both the type of player that can have a huge impact in this league. So, on paper, we’re better for the signings, right?
Short-term, i.e. the next few games, I’d say yes. They all bring a level of creativity and skill that has been sorely lacking rom our squad. It’s conceivable that they all score more than a couple goals for us this year.
Long-term, i.e. this season and beyond, the waters get a little more murky. All three players come with “bagged” in the form of an attitude taht has made them outcasts from previous squads. Robert is famous for clashing with his teammates at Newcastle; Ricketts for showing great promise but even less interest in excelling; Guevara’s list of attitudinal issues is even more extensive.
I can see this becoming a huge issue as the season progresses and wouldn’t be surprised if one of our shiny new additions doesn’t make it to the end of the season.
BUT, here’s where Carver can show his worth - Player Management. He needs to effectively balance the egos of his squad. Toronto FC is a team that, last year, found pride in their locker-room camaraderie and their competitive, though often losing, play on-field.
This year they’ve barely shown competitiveness, and hopefully they won’t lose their positive environment in the locker room.
Yet the questions remains - if they can win and not get along, do we prefer it to happy losers? It’ll definitely change the look of the team and how we support TFC. But winnings the goal, in the end, is it not?
We’ll see over the coming weeks and months, but I say let it play out and hope for the best.
Oh, and Colin Samuel is gone. Word is he asked to be released earlier this week. Boohoo. He had his shot and he failed to impress.
